Simulation of Formation Flight Near L2 for the TPF Mission

چکیده
The TPF Mission (Terrestrial Planet Finder) is one of the center pieces of the NASA Origins Program. The goal of TPF is to identify terrestrial planets around stars nearby the Solar System. For this purpose, a space-based infrared interferometer with a baseline of approximately 100 m is required. To achieve such a large baseline, a distributed system of five spacecraft flying in formation is an efficient approach. Since the TPF instruments needs a cold and stable environment, near Earth orbits are unsuitable. Two potential orbits have been identified: a SIRTF-like heliocentric orbit and a libration orbit near the L2.Lagrange point. In this paper, we focus on the mission in an orbit near L2. Our work showed that for the TPF Mission:

Searching for life with the Terrestrial Planet Finder: Lagrange point options for a formation flying interferometer
Whether life exists beyond Earth is a fundamental question. To answer this and related questions requires access to space, making the search for life within our solar system and beyond a quest that only the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), along with its international partners, can answer. The Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) is one of the key missions in NASA’s Astronomical...
متن کاملMidcourse Trajectory Shaping for Air and Ballistic Defence Guidance Using Bezier Curves
A near-optimal midcourse trajectory shaping guidance algorithm is proposed for both air and ballistic target engagement mission attributes for generic long range interceptor missile. This guidance methodology is based on the maximum final velocity as the objective function and maximum permissible flight altitude as the in-flight state constraint as well as the head-on orientation as the termina...
متن کاملAirborne Seeker Application in Three Dimensional Formation Flight of UAVs
This paper deals with the leader-follower formation control problem while communication constraint in data transmitting is considered. From a practical point of view, we study the case in which unmanned vehicles are subject to the limited sensing, and communication is of a particular interest. A three-dimensional formation flight of multi-unmanned aerial vehicles with leader-follower configurat...
متن کاملHardware-in-the-loop Testing of Continuous Control Algorithms for a Precision Formation Flying Demonstration Mission “18 International Symposium on Space Flight Dynamics”
A sample mission sequence is defined for a low earth orbit demonstration of Precision Formation Flying (PFF). Various guidance navigation and control strategies are discussed for use in the PFF experiment phases. A sample PFF experiment is implemented and tested in a realistic Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) simulation using the Formation Flying Test Bed (FFTB) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
متن کاملJPL Publication 05 - 8 Technology Plan for the Terrestrial Planet Finder Coronagraph
The Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) is envisaged as a series of two space observatories: an 8-m class optical coronagraph, to be launched around 2016; and a mid-infrared formation-flying interferometer, to be launched sometime prior to 2020. The goal of these missions, broadly stated, is to understand the formation and evolution of planets and, ultimately, of life beyond our Solar System. In su...
